What is a irregular verb?

There are about 200 irregular verbs in German. While the conjugation of regular verbs adheres to some simple rules, irregular verbs don’t follow these rules. They are also often characterized by the fact that vowels from the verb stem are exchanged during conjugation and that their endings change in preterite (past tense) and perfect tense. In the present tense, only the 2nd and 3rd person singular change. The plural of German irregular verbs A1 is conjugated like regular verbs.
Example: helfen (to help), du hilfst (2nd person singular), er / sie / es hilft (3rd person singular)

As you can see, the vowel “e” in “helfen” gets exchanged for an “i”. Thus “helfen” is an irregular verb.

What about strong verbs?

Apart from irregular and irregular verbs, there are also strong and weak verbs in German. While weak verbs don’t change the stem vowel in conjugation, strong verbs have this exchange just like irregular verbs. Due to this they are usually regarded as irregular verbs.

Some linguists though argue that there are rules for the conjugation of strong verbs, thus they should be considered regular verbs. But as they behave differently to regular verbs, we will follow general tradition here and treat them as irregular verbs.

What does Level A1 mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR or CEFRL) defines three separate stages of fluency in any language. These three are ranging from A (elementary) over B (independent) up to C (proficient). Each of these is further divided into two substages 1 & 2. So, in the end you have six different levels for describing proficiency in speaking and understanding a language, ranging from A1 (beginner) up to C2 (expert).

In this article, we will look at the verbs needed to master level A1.

You don’t need to know all the conjugations of these verbs for level A1. All you need to know are the six modal verbs dürfen, können, mögen, müssen, sollen and wollen.
